Last month, we kicked off a new pilot to try out Epic’s Summarize Notes with Generative AI tool. Summarize Notes is a new activity Epic designed to summarize a subset of a patient’s notes to save clinicians time getting up to speed about recent medical developments for a patient not seen recently or never seen before. The system identifies recent notes of interest, or a clinician can select specific notes of interest, and the system uses AI to generate a short summary of pertinent details. Reference links are available in the summary to see the full notes when more context is needed.
Twenty clinicians across BJC Medical Group and WashU Department of Medicine are trying out this new feature for 60 days and providing feedback on the summaries within Epic. Feedback options include if the summary was accurate, useful, too long or short, missing information, confusing, or took too long to generate. All of this feedback will go back to Epic to help continuously improve this new tool.
