National Academy of Medicine
The Innovation Lab recently participated in a special National Academy of Medicine publication on generative AI, with an accompanying companion publication in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The sister publications note that the integration of generative AI in health care holds significant potential to transform the practice of medicine and the health and well-being of patients. However, successful, ethical, and equitable implementation of generative AI requires careful consideration of the associated risks. Collaboration among health care providers, patients, policymakers, ethicists, and researchers, along with a cross-sector commitment to maximizing the benefit of generative AI while minimizing the risks, is important for navigating the complexities.
Center for Healthcare Innovation at Wake Forest School of Medicine
The Innovation Lab was invited to the Center for Healthcare Innovation (CHI) at Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to advise on its operations. CHI, under the leadership of Jeff Williamson, Eric Kirkendall, Paul Yalton, and Jen Wiles, has been a pioneer in developing and implementing innovations in identifying patients with cognitive decline, assessing frailty in patients, and developing digital tools to support both nursing and pharmacy services. The Lab and other members of the external advisory board recommended that the CHI continue to identify, test, and scale novel care models that utilize digital tools to improve the experience and outcomes of both patients and clinical teams.

Healthcare Innovators Professional Society Annual Meeting
In March, the Innovation Lab was pleased to host the annual meeting of the Healthcare Innovators Professional Society (HIPS). Over 20 innovation leads from a variety of health systems around the country convened in St. Louis for a day-long review of innovation priorities and opportunities in healthcare. We also heard from leadership at a variety of innovation companies, including Shiv Rao from Abridge, an AI-enabled clinical documentation company, and Josiah Meyer from HealthLeap, a digitally enabled clinical nutrition company.
