Project Spotlight: Physician Wellness — Ambient Notes

July 31, 2024

As part of our Physician Wellness program, we are continuing to pilot new technologies to offer our providers ways to increase efficiencies in their workflow and decrease workload burden with the tasks they need to do each day. This summer we will be piloting an ambient notes tool called Abridge Inside. This new technology transforms patient-clinician conversations into structured clinical notes in real-time, using generative AI.

The tool resides within Haiku and with a push of a button, providers can focus more on the patient instead of taking notes during the patient visit. The technology listens to the conversation between provider and patient and summarizes the important, medically relevant parts into a complete note.

Providers will review the note for accuracy, add any relevant information, then sign and complete the note. They can also go back to the transcript and recording of the visit to listen again to what was said during the visit. This pilot will run for 60 days with 30 providers testing it out across BJC HealthCare and Washington University School of Medicine.

Our goal is to see if this technology can help improve efficiency for our providers and reduce the amount of time that they spend writing notes for their patient visits. We are excited to see what we learn with this exciting new technology, all while keeping the clinicians and patients at the center of why we do what we do.
