Physician wellness is a topic we’ve all been hearing a lot, especially lately. The Healthcare Innovation Lab was recently asked to do some discovery on the wellness efforts going on at BJC and Washington University School of Medicine. What we found was very encouraging because of the multitude of opportunities available to our physicians.
BJC Medical Group has been focusing on wellness for a few years and is undertaking Epic optimizations and personalization by department as well as hiring the right number of staff.
Multiple departments within WUSM have wellness activities and resources available to their care team members. For example, Anesthesiology shares a wellness newsletter with upcoming optional activities from group walks and exercise sessions to book clubs and more. They also have monthly workshops devoted to professional development fundamentals and skill topics.
Several WUSM departments have Wellness Champions to help provide resources to the team and organize forums, hotlines, and therapy resources. The GME office also has a website to house all of its wellness resources to help improve resident and fellow wellness.
With all the incredible efforts happening around us, the Lab is gathering the best practices from within our environment, as well as opportunities from market leaders to share. Our hope is to have a wellness resource, or two, for each member of our BJC & WUSM community.
